Dexter Doubleday: A Fight for Freedom
Dexter Doubleday was born in 1758 into a wealthy family in Connecticut. His father was a successful merchant and his mother was a devout Christian. Doubleday received a good education and was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and become a businessman. However, Doubleday had other plans. He was drawn to the ideals of the Enlightenment and believed that all men were created equal. When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, Doubleday joined the Continental Army and fought for independence.
Doubleday was a brave and skilled soldier. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a captain. He fought in many of the most important battles of the war, including the Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Yorktown. In 1780, Doubleday was captured by the British and held as a prisoner of war. He was imprisoned in a British prison ship for over a year. During his time in prison, Doubleday endured harsh conditions and witnessed the death of many of his fellow prisoners. However, he never gave up hope. He continued to believe in the cause of American independence.
