Gender, Race, and the National Education Association: A Historical Perspective
The National Education Association (NEA) is the largest professional organization for educators in the United States. Founded in 1857, the NEA has a long and complex history that has been shaped by the changing social and political landscape of the country. Two of the most important factors that have influenced the NEA's development are gender and race.
From its inception, the NEA was dominated by white men. Women were not allowed to join the organization until 1870, and they were not given full membership rights until 1920. African Americans were also excluded from the NEA until 1935. Even after these groups were granted membership, they continued to face discrimination and exclusion within the organization.

In recent decades, the NEA has made significant progress in addressing issues of gender and race. The organization has adopted policies that promote diversity and inclusion, and it has created programs to support women and minorities in education. However, the NEA still has a long way to go in achieving true equity for all members.
The book Gender, Race, and the National Education Association provides a comprehensive overview of the complex history of gender and race within the NEA. Drawing on extensive archival research and oral histories, the book sheds light on the ways in which gender and race have shaped the NEA's policies, practices, and mission over time.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides a historical overview of the NEA, from its founding in 1857 to the present day. The second part examines the role of gender in the NEA, including the challenges faced by women educators and the progress that has been made in recent decades.
The third part of the book focuses on the role of race in the NEA, including the history of segregation and discrimination within the organization and the progress that has been made in recent decades. The book concludes with a discussion of the challenges that the NEA still faces in achieving true equity for all members.
