The Girl from Guantánamo: A Harrowing True Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
By Rukhsana Aslam and Katherine G. Young
In 2002, Rukhsana Aslam was a 24-year-old Pakistani woman living in London. She had a good job, a loving family, and a bright future ahead of her. But all of that changed on September 11, 2001.
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, the United States launched a global war on terror. Pakistan, a close ally of the United States, was eager to cooperate in this effort. As a result, Pakistani authorities began rounding up suspected terrorists, including Aslam.

Aslam was arrested in December 2002 and taken to a secret detention center in Pakistan. She was held there for over a year without being charged with a crime. During that time, she was subjected to sleep deprivation, beatings, and other forms of torture.
In 2004, Aslam was transferred to Guantánamo Bay, the U.S. military prison in Cuba. She was one of only seven women ever held at Guantánamo. At Guantánamo, Aslam was subjected to even more extreme forms of torture. She was kept in solitary confinement for long periods of time, and she was forced to endure painful and humiliating strip searches.
Aslam was finally released from Guantánamo in 2006. She returned to Pakistan a broken woman. She had been tortured both physically and psychologically, and she struggled to readjust to life outside of prison.
But Aslam refused to give up. She dedicated herself to fighting for the rights of other Guantánamo detainees. She founded the Justice for Guantánamo Detainees campaign, and she has spoken out against torture and arbitrary detention around the world.
In 2018, Aslam published her memoir, The Girl from Guantánamo. The book is a harrowing account of her time in prison, but it is also a story of hope and resilience. Aslam's story is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can prevail.
The Girl from Guantánamo is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the true cost of the war on terror. It is a powerful indictment of torture and arbitrary detention, and it is a reminder of the importance of human rights.
