Instructions

Cocoon

  1. CO 90 (96) stitches.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  3. Rnd 1: K1, *P3, K3* (Rep around).
  4. Rnd 2: K2, *P3, K3* (Rep around).
  5. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until the cocoon measures 11 inches (28 cm) long from the CO edge.
  6. Rnd 1: K1, *P3, CO 2, K3* (Rep around).
  7. Rnd 2: K2, *P3, CO 2, K3* (Rep around).
  8. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until the cocoon measures 13 inches (33 cm) long from the CO edge.
  9. Rnd 1: K1, *P3, K3, CO 2, K3* (Rep around).
  10. Rnd 2: K2, *P3, K3, CO 2, K3* (Rep around).
  11. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until the cocoon measures 15 inches (38 cm) long from the CO edge.
  12. Rnd 1: K1, *P3, K3, K3, CO 2, K3* (Rep around).
  13. Rnd 2: K2, *P3, K3, K3, CO 2, K3* (Rep around).
  14. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until the cocoon measures 16 inches (40 cm) long from the CO edge.
  15. Cast off all stitches.

Hat

  1. CO 96 (104) stitches.
  2. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  3. Rnd 1: K1, *P2, K2* (Rep around).
  4. Rnd 2: K2, *P2, K2* (Rep around).
  5. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for 4 inches (10 cm).
  6. Shape the crown:
  7. Rnd 1: *K2tog, P2*
  8. Rnd 2: *P2, K2tog*
  9. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 12 (16) stitches remain.
  10. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail.
  11. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the crown.

Pompom (optional)

  1. Wrap the yarn around the pompom maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Cut the yarn and tie it tightly around the center of the pompom.
  3. Remove the pompom from the maker and trim the yarn to desired length.
  4. Sew the pompom to the top of the hat.

Finishing

  1. Weave in any loose ends.
  2. Block the cocoon and hat to desired shape and size.

  • Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Lay flat to dry.
  • Do not bleach.
  • Do not iron.
