This comprehensive guide will provide you with everything you need to know about Amadeus, from his early life and career to his most famous works. Whether you are a student, teacher, or performer, this book will help you to deepen your understanding and appreciation of one of the greatest composers in history.

Who Was Amadeus?

Amadeus was born Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Salzburg, Austria, on January 27, 1756. He was the son of Leopold Mozart, a musician and composer, and Anna Maria Pertl, the daughter of a Salzburg town official. Mozart showed an early talent for music, and by the age of five he was composing simple pieces.

Mozart's father recognized his son's talent and began to teach him music at a young age. Mozart quickly progressed, and by the age of 13 he had written his first opera, Mitridate, re di Ponto.

In 1769, Mozart and his father traveled to Italy, where they met with some of the most famous musicians of the day. Mozart was particularly impressed by the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti, whose keyboard works had a profound influence on his own compositions.

Mozart returned to Salzburg in 1773 and began to work as a court musician. However, he was not satisfied with his position and in 1781 he moved to Vienna, where he hoped to find greater success.

Mozart's Career in Vienna

Mozart's early years in Vienna were difficult. He struggled to find a permanent position and was forced to rely on commissions and performances of his works. However, his fortunes began to change in 1786 when he was appointed court composer to Emperor Joseph II.

As court composer, Mozart was commissioned to write operas, concertos, and symphonies for the emperor's court. This gave him the financial security he needed to focus on his music. Mozart's operas, such as The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, were among the most popular and acclaimed operas of the day.

Mozart's concertos and symphonies were also highly regarded. His Piano Concerto No. 21 is considered one of the greatest piano concertos ever written. And his Symphony No. 41, known as the "Jupiter" Symphony, is regarded as one of the greatest symphonies ever written.

Mozart's Death and Legacy

Mozart died on December 5, 1791, at the age of 35. The cause of his death is unknown, but it is believed that he died from a combination of factors, including rheumatic fever, pneumonia, and malnutrition.

Mozart was buried in a pauper's grave in Vienna. However, his music has lived on, and he is now considered one of the greatest composers in history. His operas, concertos, and symphonies continue to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.

Why is Mozart's Music So Popular?

There are many reasons why Mozart's music is so popular. His music is:

  • Melodic: Mozart's melodies are often described as "singable." They are easy to remember and hum, and they appeal to a wide range of listeners.
  • Harmonically sophisticated: Mozart's music is full of rich and complex harmonies. However, these harmonies are never overwhelming, and they serve to enhance the beauty of the melodies.
  • Structurally sound: Mozart's music is always well-structured. He uses a variety of musical forms, but he always manages to create a sense of balance and unity.
  • Expressive: Mozart's music is full of emotion. He can express a wide range of emotions, from the sublime to the ridiculous, and he always manages to do so in a way that is both moving and entertaining.

Amadeus was a genius who created some of the most beautiful and beloved music in the world. His music continues to be popular today because it is melodic, harmonically sophisticated, structurally sound, and expressive. If you are a student, teacher, or performer, I encourage you to explore Mozart's music. I am confident that you will find it to be both rewarding and inspiring.
