The Essex had a successful first year of whaling. The crew caught several whales and filled their ship with oil. However, in November 1821, the Essex was attacked by a sperm whale. The whale rammed the ship several times, causing it to sink. The crew was forced to abandon ship and take to the small boats.
The crew of the Essex spent the next three months at sea in their small boats. They were constantly threatened by hunger, thirst, and storms. To survive, the crew resorted to cannibalism. They ate the bodies of their dead shipmates.
In February 1822, the crew of the Essex was finally rescued by the whaling ship Dauphin. Of the 20 men who had set sail on the Essex, only eight survived.
The story of the Essex is a tragic tale of survival and cannibalism. It is a reminder of the dangers that whalers faced in the 19th century.
