College and Law School

After graduating from high school, Obama attended Occidental College in Los Angeles. He majored in political science and international relations. While at Occidental, Obama became involved in anti-apartheid activism. He also worked as a community organizer in Chicago.

In 1983, Obama transferred to Columbia University in New York City. He graduated from Columbia in 1985 with a degree in political science. After graduating from college, Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago. He also worked as a writer and editor for the Davis, Polk & Wardell law firm.

In 1988, Obama entered Harvard Law School. He graduated from Harvard in 1991 with a Juris Doctor degree. After graduating from law school, Obama returned to Chicago to work as a civil rights lawyer.

Political Career

In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate. He served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004. While in the Illinois State Senate, Obama passed legislation on a variety of issues, including education, healthcare, and criminal justice.

In 2004, Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate. He served in the U.S. Senate from 2005 to 2008. While in the U.S. Senate, Obama passed landmark legislation on a variety of issues, including climate change, healthcare, and financial reform.
